Emperors of the Shade A TRIBUTE TO HOSTAS
Hostas are among the most treasured and beloved of all shade plants. With so many varieties of differing foliage color, texture, and floral characteristics, Hostas provide special seasonal contrast and interest in the shady perennial border. Many of the Hostas in this collection are prize winners of such prestigious awards as the American Hosta Society Eunice Fisher Award, the Midwest Gold Award, and the Presidents Exhibitors Trophy Award. Hostas are simple to grow and easy to maintain, and have value in the landscape as specimen plantings, ground covers, or contrast plantings in mixed borders. Hostas grow well in some of the darkest spots of the garden, where many perennials would not survive, and still have the flexibility to be planted in more sunny locations. As long as they are given plenty of mulch and moisture, Hostas will live happily with little effort on the gardener's part.

helpful hints
- Hostas thrive in cool, moist soil that drains well. Dig in mulched leaves from last fall to make the soil rich, cool, and well draining.
- A few choice stones in the landscape will create an appealing backdrop and set off the variety and textures of Hosta's foliage.
- Some Hostas such as 'Sum and Substance' grow huge, so be sure to allow the proper spacing between plantings.
- The Hosta is easy to grow, provides interesting foliage contrasts, and is an excellent choice for a low-maintenance ground cover.
