Romancing the Stone
A ROCK GARDEN FOR CLOSE-UP ENJOYMENT
Plants ideal for rock gardens are fairly small, so this garden should be placed along walks, patios, or locations that are seen closely during outdoor activities. Because most perennials suitable for rock gardening need excellent drainage, this garden should be developed on a slope, mound, or raised bed. Some plants benefit from close placement to rocks, which keep soil moist longer for their fine, shallow roots. Plants suitable for rock gardens also need full sun - a minimum of six to eight hours of full sunlight each day - so arrange this garden away from large trees or tall structures. Rocks may provide some soil stabilization on a slope; plants located above and behind them will have excellent drainage and may cascade downward over them. Use large rocks to set off the smaller plants and form a background. The relatively low-growing plants in this garden will not be low in flowering quantity but will provide a beautiful display of textures and colors throughout the entire growing season.

helpful hints
  • Develop this garden on a slope, mound, or raised bed to provide the proper drainage that rock garden perennials need.
  • Plant in full sun away from large trees or tall structures.
  • Adding stones to a slope can help to create a natural and authentic rock garden as well as provide soil stabilization.
  • If you live in Zone 5, substitute the Zone 6 Santolina with a drought-tolerant perennial such as Veronica prostrata 'Nestor.'
