Deer Crossing
A DELIGHTFUL ARRAY OF DEER-RESISTANT PLANTS
This garden comprises plants less palatable to deer than many. We cannot say that it is completely deer-resistant, because as the population of deer increases or their food supply diminishes, they begin to eat plants they would not normally eat. Rabbits also find these plants unappealing, so these selections could be used in a landscape where rabbits are a problem. For early spring color, you could incorporate Daffodils-which are also unattractive to both deer and rabbits. The garden is designed as a border planting that could be doubled and used on each side of a corner planting of common Lilac, Crepe Myrtle, Holly, Butterfly Bush, Viburnum, or other shrubs and small trees that will blend with the planting but are not highly attractive to deer. With this delightful array, it may be possible to enjoy both flowers and wildlife in the same landscape.

helpful hints
  • Substitute Lavender, Verbascum, and Artemisia 'Powis Castle' for Salvia 'May Night', Alchemilla mollis, and Artemisia pontica, and Deer Crossing could be a Zone 5 garden.
  • Be sure to give plenty of spacing and airflow between the Phlox to prevent mildew.
  • Drip irrigation will ensure your flowers bloom for the longest period possible by avoiding the damaged blossoms and midnight mildew often caused by conventional overhead-watering systems.
  • Planting is quick and easy using a posthole digger.
