Hollyhocks were among the first flowers that colonists brought to the New World, and they’ve been a favorite ever since. Their colorful, bowl-shaped bloms, held aloft on towering spires, are a highlight of the summer garden.

Hollyhocks provide excellent architectural height in the garden and make good backdrops for lower growing perennials. Try growing them in the cottage garden style by planting them up against a wall or picket fence. Holloyhocks are mostly biennials or short-lived perennials, and will reseed themselves.

Feel free to grow hollyhocks under Black Walnut trees; they are tolerant of the toxic juglone that is emitted through the trees’ roots.
