ATTRIBUTES       Cultivar Notes - Pink Chintz One of the first thymes to flower each year, this charming and reliable cultivar bursts into bloom in early spring with unique salmon-pink flowers. Its fuzzy olive-green foliage forms a mat 1 to 2 inches tall and 18 inches wide. It is one of the most tolerant of thymes of dry conditions, but grows robustly with plenty of water. Species Notes - Thymus serpyllum Creeping Thyme is a sun-loving herb valued as an ornamental groundcover. It is native to hot, dry Mediterranean regions. Consequently it thrives in similar conditions in American gardens. Plant it in full sun and moderately fertile, average to dry, well-drained soil. (Keep plants watered until they are established.) Thyme benefits from occasional shearing after blooming to keep plants full and bushy. It does not need to be divided to stay healthy, but may need to be thinned out to prevent spreading. Genus Notes - Thymus Thyme is known as a culinary herb, but several members of the genus make attractive evergreen carpets in sunny, dry locations. They have charming flowers and aromatic foliage, and they tolerate light foot traffic. |
