Cultivar Notes -
Mount Baker
A cross done by F. L. Skinnner, Dropmore, Manitoba. The cultivar is very hardy and blooms before French Hybrid Lilacs. Single white blossom. Large shrub for background use. Profuse bloomer.
Genus Notes -
Syringa
Syringa is the Lilac genus, most often represented by S. vulgaris, the Common or French Lilac. Less well known but equally useful are the species Lilacs, compact and floriferous shrubs that are rarely bothered by powdery mildew. Lilacs develop their best habit and flowers when grown in full sun and prefer average to fertile soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline and well-drained. Though moderately drought tolerant, they still prefer supplemental water during very dry spells. Next year’s flower buds are set shortly after blooming, so prune directly after their yearly display.
