Cultivar Notes -
Purple Fountain Grass (Rubrum)
Gracefully arching, wine-purple foliage topped with burgundy, soft bottlebrush plumes up to 1’ long appear in midsummer. Enjoy its winter interest too-the plumes and the leaves will turn a subtle straw color after the first hard freeze.
Series Notes -
Graceful Grasses®
Proven Winners’® selection of ornamental grasses has won acclaim, with top performers in university trials nationwide. Whether planted en masse in the landscape or catching the eye as the centerpiece of a patio planter, Graceful Grasses® provide texture, color, movement and interest.
Species Notes -
Pennisetum setaceum
Often grown as an annual in northern zones, Purple Fountain Grass is splendid in containers, around ponds, or as a focal point in the garden.
Genus Notes -
Pennisetum
Pennisetum are favorites and prized for their arching multitude of bottle-brush seed plumes over tidy cascading foliage. Showy and easy to grow; they are lovely alone, in groups and in containers. The slightest breeze produces movement. Great for drying. Good for hot dry spots. Newer varieties like Etouffee, Cayenne, Hush Puppy, and Praline are bred to be infertile, which means they do not self-sow their seed.
