Storm Cloud
Click to display
Native perennials are trending, and Bluestar is the classic North American perennial! ‘Storm Cloud’ is a very exciting new variety that performs well for both northern and southern growers. In spring, new stems emerge near-black with leaves that are very dark green with silver veins. The stems stay dark throughout spring. Light periwinkle blue, star-shaped flowers completely cover the foliage in late spring, and rebloom for many weeks afterward. Although the main interest of this plant is in spring, it maintains a great garden presence throughout the summer and fall. Its wide, mounded habit lends itself well to be used in place of shrubs in the landscape. Younger plants will have more of a vase-like habit, but make sure to give this plant some space for when it reaches its mature size. This easy care, heat and humidity tolerant, deer resistant perennial is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for low maintenance or native perennials.

Hello Yellow
Click to display
A virtually hassle-free, very long lived perennial, this cultivar of our native A. tuberosa offers three months of golden yellow blooms from early through late summer. Deadheading the flowers will stimulate another bloom cycle about a month after the first one.

The flowers, which are heavily laden with nectar and pollen, are particularly attractive to hummingbirds, Monarch butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects.

Gather bouquets of Asclepias all summer long; the long stems are wonderful for cutting and are long-lasting. Sear the ends of the cut stems over a flame to stop the milky sap from leaking out.

Following the fabulous flowers, green fruits develop which rupture to reveal seeds with long, silvery-white, silky hairs reminiscent of its cousin, common milkweed. These are great to use in dried flower arrangements.

The abundant blooms appear from mid-to-late Summer and look fantastic when grown up a trellis or wall. It is also a good clematis to grow through shrubs or trees as it is pruned right back and so never becomes too much of a burden on the supporting plant.

Piilu ("Little Duckling")
Click to display
Often touted as the most heavily blooming Clematis, you are sure to be impressed by ‘Piilu’s’ shower of blossoms from late spring through early fall. This selection blooms first on old wood, producing 3-4” double, light pink blossoms with a prominent, wide, dark purplish red bar. Flowers produced successively on new wood are of the same color but are single.

In cooler climates, this plant blooms continuously all season long. In hot climates, it will likely take a break at the height of summer and then rebloom in fall. Unlike many Clematis which produce the majority of their flowers at the top of the vine, ‘Piilu’ blooms from top to bottom, leaving no bare spots at the bottom.

This first year flowering perennial reportedly keeps on blooming without having to be deadheaded, though you may still want to trim back spent flowers to maintain a tidy appearance.

According to PanAm Seed, their PowWow Echinaceas are more floriferous, faster to flower, and genetically shorter than other seed grown varieties.

PowWow™ Wild Berry

This variety is incredibly impressive for a seed grown Echinacea. It’s no surprise that it is a 2010 All America Selections winner. This first year flowering perennial reportedly keeps on blooming without having to be deadheaded, though you may still want to trim back spent flowers to maintain a tidy appearance.

In plant trial gardens, it was noted how floriferous the plants were. Each stocky, relatively short plant carried a bouquet of fragrant, 3-4”, deep purple-pink to near-magenta flowers on stiff, branched stems. More branches result in more flowers per plant and a showier display in the landscape. It was noted that the older flowers were nearly the same magenta color as the new flowers; the flowers held their bright coloration very well as they aged.
