1 This is a list of plants that deer do not typically eat, but please keep in mind that no plant is absolutely safe—if the deer are hungry enough they will eat almost anything. The plants listed here are less likely to be sampled by a roaming deer than other plants. If you choose to use deer repellants, they work best if applied before there is damage and if reapplied every two weeks and after heavy rains.

Tips for Efficient Printing
Before proceeding:
  • To print more columns on a single page, print the report in Landscape mode. To do this, change your printer's 'Orientation' to Landscape in your browser's Printer Settings dialog box.
  • Hide unneeded columns (to reduce print output width) by unchecking column names in the 'View Preferences' box at the bottom of this screen. If this screen is currently in the 'Plant Images Only' view, you must first click the 'Display In List Format' checkbox before you can hide the columns you do not want to print. Your print output will match whatever you are viewing here.

This selection forms a dense tuft of bluer-than-blue leaves that remain blue all season. Spikes of tan flowers in early summer. Excellent for mass planting, edging, or in the rock garden. Clumps are easily divided in early spring, and this should be done every 2 to 3 years. Evergreen in mild areas, in colder winter regions the leaves should be trimmed back in late winter right to the base. Flower spikes may also be removed in summer, if desired.

93. Blue Whiskers
Click to display
When it comes to ornamental grasses, Blue Fescue has long been a popular choice due to its diminutive size and interesting texture. Compared to classic variety ‘Elijah Blue’, ‘Blue Whiskers’ is a taller, more vigorous variety, with longer leaves and a brighter blue foliage color. The finely textured, bright silvery blue leaves form a fully rounded, robust clump with consistent flower coverage across the habit. Yellow-green flowers appear above the clump on 18-22” scapes in early summer and age to tan as the season progresses.

96. Storm Cloud
Click to display
Native perennials are trending, and Bluestar is the classic North American perennial! ‘Storm Cloud’ is a very exciting new variety that performs well for both northern and southern growers. In spring, new stems emerge near-black with leaves that are very dark green with silver veins. The stems stay dark throughout spring. Light periwinkle blue, star-shaped flowers completely cover the foliage in late spring, and rebloom for many weeks afterward. Although the main interest of this plant is in spring, it maintains a great garden presence throughout the summer and fall. Its wide, mounded habit lends itself well to be used in place of shrubs in the landscape. Younger plants will have more of a vase-like habit, but make sure to give this plant some space for when it reaches its mature size. This easy care, heat and humidity tolerant, deer resistant perennial is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for low maintenance or native perennials.

Vivid yellow foliage holds up to the heat of summer and offers bold, beautiful contrast when blue flowers begin to appear in late summer. Also known as blue mist spirea, despite the fact that it is not remotely related to Spiraea.
