Tips for Efficient Printing
Before proceeding:
  • To print more columns on a single page, print the report in Landscape mode. To do this, change your printer's 'Orientation' to Landscape in your browser's Printer Settings dialog box.
  • Hide unneeded columns (to reduce print output width) by unchecking column names in the 'View Preferences' box at the bottom of this screen. If this screen is currently in the 'Plant Images Only' view, you must first click the 'Display In List Format' checkbox before you can hide the columns you do not want to print. Your print output will match whatever you are viewing here.

Chives (Garlic)Allium schoenoprasum
2. Garlic Chives
Click to display
This chive has garlic-flavored leaves, and the stems of this Asian herb aren’t hollow and are skinnier and flatter than traditional chives.

The plants will tolerate light shade, but try for full sun and be sure to harvest the stem almost all the way to the ground to ensure this herb produces new stems.

Chives (Onion)
3. Onion Chives
Click to display
Both edible and ornamental! The leaves of common chives can be harvested at any time. They taste much like green onions and have similar hollow leaves. This plant also produces lavender, pom-pom-like flowers atop leafless stems in late spring.

Onion (Ornamental)Allium
4. Bubble Bath
Click to display
Soft lavender flower clusters are held on strong stems above a mound of glaucous blue green foliage. The wide, linear leaves have a slight twist. Compared to ‘Millenium’, ‘Bubble Bath’ has lighter purple flowers on larger 3" flower clusters. Compared with the bulb-type varieties like ‘Globemaster’, this type of Allium will have smaller, more numerous flower clusters, bloom in summer instead of spring, and have foliage that stays attractive through fall.

5. Lavender Bubbles
Click to display
Nearing the end of summer, this beautiful perennial brings life to a garden with its beautiful bubble-shaped flowers. Dark dusty purple flower globes are produced above attractive glaucous blue-green foliage. The leaf blades twist and curl to provide additional interest. Compared to the popular ‘Millenium’, ‘Lavender Bubbles’ blooms later and is a darker shade of purple. Like other Allium, ‘Lavender Bubbles’ is carefree, easy to grow, and deer and rabbit resistant.

6. Millenium
Click to display
‘Millenium’ forms a compact, upright clump of glossy green, thick and strappy leaves which emit a slight smell of onion when crushed. In late July and August here in Michigan, a profusion of large 2”, bright rosy purple, tightly rounded clusters of flowers appear on strong stems just above the attractive foliage. Butterflies and honeybees adore the flowers’ sweet nectar but deer and rabbits steer clear of this perennial beauty. This plant has not been known to reseed in the landscape and is very easy to grow.

7. Serendipity
Click to display
The word "serendipity" means an unexpected occurrence, and what a fitting name for this sport of the popular ‘Millenium’! The sport shares all of the qualities that made ‘Millenium’ great, but with attractive blue foliage. Globe-like, rosy-purple flowers match the parent and are produced profusely in mid to late summer. When crushed, the leaves will emit a smell of onion.

Butterflies and honeybees adore the flowers’ sweet nectar but deer and rabbits steer clear of this perennial beauty.

 Allium Tanguticum
8. Summer Beauty
Click to display
Highly attractive ornamental onion of long seasonal interest. From late June through July rounded heads, 1 1/2", of lavender-purple cup shaped flowers complement the narrow, glossy rich dark green foliage. In fall, the foliage turns an attractive yellow, a nice contrast to the reddish-brown flower stems that last well into the winter. Sterile flowers prevent any invasive issues. Drought and light shade tolerant.

 Allium x senescens
9. Pink Planet
Click to display
Allium ‘Pink Planet’ forms a nice clump of slightly twisted, thin, glaucous blue-green leaves, thanks to the influence of Allium senescens. The vigorous, deer-resistant clumps are topped with numerous 18" tall stalks, each terminating in a 3" wide, dense flower head of pale pink flowers. Allium ‘Pink Planet’ is a great attractant to bees and butterflies. Finally, this plant is a superb performer in heat and humidity.
