A beautiful, medium sized, cold hardy, specimen tree with a dense, rounded crown and glossy, emerald green foliage that provides brilliant maroon-red fall color. Fan-like leaves are comprised of multiple, lance-shaped, toothy leaflets that are resistant to summer leaf scorch. Showy panicles of yellow flower spikes adorn the branch tips in spring. Deciduous.

Not to be confused with the edible chestnuts from the species in the genus Castanea, the fruits of horse chestnuts (genus Aesculus) are ornamental and contain a toxin and should not be ingested.

Spreading tree with 5- to 7- palmate, dark green glossy leaves composed of stalkless or short-stalked, often slightly twisted, leaflets 10" long. Bears dark rose-red flowers with yellow centers from late spring to early summer, followe by spiny fruit.
