Tips for Efficient Printing
Before proceeding:
  • To print more columns on a single page, print the report in Landscape mode. To do this, change your printer's 'Orientation' to Landscape in your browser's Printer Settings dialog box.
  • Hide unneeded columns (to reduce print output width) by unchecking column names in the 'View Preferences' box at the bottom of this screen. If this screen is currently in the 'Plant Images Only' view, you must first click the 'Display In List Format' checkbox before you can hide the columns you do not want to print. Your print output will match whatever you are viewing here.

2. Fanal
Click to display
‘Fanal’ has been around since 1933 but remains one of the best red Astilbes. It is attractive in almost every season. The fernlike foliage emerges a deep bronzy red in spring, then turns a rich green that looks good all summer.
12B-N8" Gr 20"12"-15"3-8
 Astilbe chinensis
3. Dark Side of the Moon
Click to display
An instant classic for the landscape! ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ is the only dark leafed Astilbe with purple flowers that's on the market. Rich deep chocolate burgundy leaves form an incredibly attractive mound of foliage. Emerging leaves are yellow with a dark margin with a glossy sheen that become completely dark as they age. Dark stems hold raspberry buds that burst forth with rosy purple flowers. This performs best both for growing and flowering in full sun in the north with adequate moisture, but also grows in shade.

4. Maggie Daley
Click to display
A later blooming species useful for extending the bloom season into late summer. Foliage is deeply incised, coarsely textured, and often bronze-green in color. Flowers are borne on narrow, branched panicles. Though garden performance is far superior in moist soils, members of this species are moderately drought tolerant.
12B-N8" Gr 28"16"-20"4-9
 Astilbe hybrid
5. Rise and Shine
Click to display
Large, hot pink, pyramidal plumes are held on strong stems above a robust mound of beautiful foliage. This A. chinensis hybrid is more tolerant of sun and drier soils than many other astilbes.

 Astilbe simplicifolia
6. Pretty In Pink
Click to display
One of the longest blooming Astilbe with over 6 weeks of flowering. Pink flowers contrast beautifully against the dark burgundy foliage.

 Astilbe thunbergii
7. Ostrich Plume (Straussenfeder)
Click to display
Rich coral-rose, arching plumes are very large, open, and drooping; very different than typical astilbe flowers. Blooms are presented on tall stems above the glaucous foliage. Absolutely magnificent when full grown, especially near a water feature.
12B-N8" Gr 30"24"-28"4-9
False Spirea (Sem)Sorbaria sorbifolia
8. False Spirea (‘Sem’)
Click to display
Looks much like a giant, white Astilbe with its bold and dramatic, 6"-10" flowers during July and August. Bold tropical looking leaves and suckering habit. It is easy to grow and is site adaptable. Best for naturalizing where it can be allowed to spread.

9. First Editions® Matcha Ball (‘Levgreen’)
Click to display
Forming a perfect round ball fern-like leaves cover Matcha Ball® in a fresh shade of green, much like Matcha tea. When the leaves first emerge in very early spring, the leaves and petioles have hints of red and orange-peach that ultimately mature to green in the summer and yellow in the fall. Matcha Ball® sparsely blooms, which helps it maintain a tight round form throughout the growing season. It prefers moist, well-drained organic soil, and tolerates full sun to some light shade. Matcha Ball® is the perfect sized shrub for the smallest of gardens.
