Tips for Efficient Printing
Before proceeding:
  • To print more columns on a single page, print the report in Landscape mode. To do this, change your printer's 'Orientation' to Landscape in your browser's Printer Settings dialog box.
  • Hide unneeded columns (to reduce print output width) by unchecking column names in the 'View Preferences' box at the bottom of this screen. If this screen is currently in the 'Plant Images Only' view, you must first click the 'Display In List Format' checkbox before you can hide the columns you do not want to print. Your print output will match whatever you are viewing here.

AppleMalus
1. Red Delicious
Click to display
America's favorite red apple, the Red Delicious Apple is one of the most popular apples available today. It is no wonder, since this is a hardy, vigorous tree that will produce many bushels of apple every fall that can be stored for up to 5 months, so you will have your own home-grown apples for half the year and even the biggest crop will not be wasted.

The Red Delicious apple is a perfect choice to integrate into the landscape border, with its delicate white blooms in the spring, followed by crisp, large dark red, aromatic fruit in the autumn. Cross-pollinate with other apple varieties, such as the attractive ‘Cortland’ or ‘Yellow Delicious’ for best fruit production.

Because of its vigorous habit, do not plant next to slow-growing alpine plants that might get smothered. Trim back hard in midsummer to rejuvenate the foliage, if plants begin to look scruffy. Easily divided in spring or fall. May be used as a lawn substitute and mowed at any time to the desired height.

If you love ‘Mercury Rising’ but need something smaller, try ‘Red Elf’. It has very similar deep burgundy red blossoms but on a much smaller plant that only grows about a foot wide. Its smaller bun-shaped habit helps it fit better into combination container plantings or smaller borders where it will provide a rich spot of color for months beginning in early summer.

Like ‘Mercury Rising’, its deep red petal tips become frosted with a touch of white during the hottest part of the season, returning to a solid deep red when temperatures moderate. Since the flowers are sterile, they just keep on coming all season long without the need for deadheading.

A midseason shearing will keep this plant looking its best all season, though it is highly disease resistant. The only Coreopsis of its kind available—don’t miss out!

Click to display
A beautiful new bicolor addition to the popular Profusion series of Zinnias. This gorgeous Zinnia starts the season with a bold vibrant red center ring surrounded by golden-yellow outer petals. As the season progresses, the aging flowers morph into soft, beautiful shades of apricot, salmon, and dusty rose to bring a plethora of color to the garden, all from one variety! Trial garden visitors clamored over this floriferous and compact plant during the summer trials noting how well the plant continued to bloom new flowers over old so there was never a decline in the beauty presented by Profusion Red Yellow Bicolor.
