Fig (Weeping)Ficus benjamina
Weeping Fig
Click to display
The Ficus benjamina is one of the most popular houseplants in the world. Known as the weeping fig, the F. benjamina is native to India and Southeast Asia, where its an important fruit and landscape plant.

Ficus benjamina are wonderful and incredibly rewarding plants to grow indoors. They make beautiful corner plants and large indoor “trees” for entryways and foyers. Although it is a little more challenging, it is possible to overwinter F. benjamina in temperate areas without massive leaf-dropping, but it will require careful attention to watering and temperature. In general, make sure to aggressively fertilizer your ficus plant, especially during the growing season. They have a fairly high need for fertilizer. Also make sure to prune away dead branches and pick dead leaves to prevent the spread of diseases or fungal infections that can severely affect your plant. If your plant is dropping leaves despite all these steps, and you’re giving it nice bright light, try supplementing with a little magnesium and manganese. Ficus benjamina are vulnerable to pests including aphids, mealy bugs, scale, and white fly. If possible, identify the infestation as early as possible and treat with the least toxic option.

Majesty Palm

Majesty palm is a tropical tree native to Madagascar, where it can grow nearly 100 feet tall in its natural habitat. But it is increasingly rare in the wild and is now grown mostly as an indoor tree, where confining its roots keeps the plants to about 10 feet tall. It has long arching green fronds atop multiple stems. As a houseplant, it resembles a kentia palm when young and a royal palm when mature. This is high praise since these are two of the more attractive of all indoor palms.

vWhen grown indoors, majesty palm will add about 1 foot of growth per year until it reaches four to six feet, then slows down dramatically.

The Philodendron Hope Selloum (Philodendron bipinnatifidum), recently reclassified Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum or the Tree Philodendron, is a hardy native of the tropical regions of South America. In the correct conditions, their deeply lobed leaves can grow up to almost 5 feet, but indoors they can still give an immensely tropical feel to any room.

The cut leaves of the Hope Selloum can survive for months in a vase. Change the water out once a week, and place this beauty in any surface throughout your home.

Cunningham’s White

This dense-growing evergreen shrub is a highly valued landscape ornamental. Large trusses of showy white flowers create a beautiful contrast to the dark green leaves. Thrives in cooler regions but benefits from protection from winter winds. A versatile landscape shrub for foundation plantings and mixed borders.

This white-flowering rhodie is smallish and rounded; a perfect middle-of-the-border flowering shrub. Very dark foliage means it can be used as contrast for lighter variegated plants. Small stature is always a natural under oaks and older coniferous trees. Also perfect in the woodland understory and in wild gardens. Prim shape lends itself to foundation plantings, and compact form is suited to tidy entry plantings.
