Tips for Efficient Printing
Before proceeding:
  • To print more columns on a single page, print the report in Landscape mode. To do this, change your printer's 'Orientation' to Landscape in your browser's Printer Settings dialog box.
  • Hide unneeded columns (to reduce print output width) by unchecking column names in the 'View Preferences' box at the bottom of this screen. If this screen is currently in the 'Plant Images Only' view, you must first click the 'Display In List Format' checkbox before you can hide the columns you do not want to print. Your print output will match whatever you are viewing here.

Celandine Poppy Stylophorum diphyllum
48. Celandine Poppy
This attractive woodland plant will grow well in zones 4-8 in with little to no care in rich woodland soils. It can tolerate drier, sunnier sites with some care. Imagine these bright yellow poppies next to some blue Jacob's Ladder or Mertensia, pinkish Trout Lily or white Trillium in a spring, woodland garden! A welcome, well-deserved sight in April after a long winter. After seeds drop out of its large, hairy pods, Celandine Poppy will go dormant. Seedlings will readily emerge everywhere if fresh seed is scattered on the soil surface. Ants typically aid in seed dispersal.

This plant should not be confused with Chelidonium majus, Greater Celandine a Eurasian semi-weedy biennial often present in highly disturbed areas. The leaves and flowers of the two can be very difficult to distinguish, but they are very different in the seeding stage; Chelidonium has a long, hairless "legume" look, while Stylophorum's fuzzy pods (photos, left) are unmistakable.

93. Tiramisu
'Tiramisu' is a very showy H. villosa hybrid and it represents a breakthrough in heuchera breeding. In both spring and fall, the chartreuse foliage has a heavy smattering of brick red coloration that radiates out from the midrib of each leaf. During the summer, the leaves lighten to chartreuse and develop a light silver overlay.

'Tiramisu' has a fantastic compact habit, so it looks great in containers or as edging.

This plant is a Heuchera villosa hybrid. The villosa species is a large, late blooming type that exhibits an increased tolerance of high heat and humidity over other species. Most produce cream flowers in midsummer, though they are grown more for their fantastic foliage. H. villosa is native to the southeastern United States.
