Baby’s Breath has come a long way over the years, with breeders improving their habit, bloom time, and longevity in the garden. SUMMER SPARKLES® sets a new standard in taller Gypsophilas. Unlike most which are quite open in habit and go dormant in late summer, this new variety has a much more compact, refined looking form and looks great in the garden all season.

It forms a uniform, very densely branched, rounded clump of grey-green foliage that becomes completely covered in flowers from late spring through midsummer. The white flowers are small, semi-double, and slightly fragrant. They are borne prolifically on all sides of the plant. Deadheading the first round of flowers will encourage the plant to rebloom.

54. Cat’s Meow
Click to display
Truly the “cat’s meow”, the best Nepeta we’ve seen yet! Unlike most Nepetas that have a bit of a wild, unkempt look, this first class selection keeps its tidy, dense, rounded shape all season long.

Its small, grey-green, aromatic leaves are topped with well-branched stems carrying spikes of sky blue flowers with purple calyxes from early summer into early fall.

‘Cat’s Meow’ has everything today’s gardeners are looking for: a low maintenance, drought tolerant, deer resistant, long blooming perennial that looks great all season.

55. Purrsian Blue
Click to display
Like ‘Cat’s Meow’, this selection shares an improved tidy habit, though it is a bit smaller and more compact in size overall. In its first year, ‘Purrsian Blue’ forms a small, perfectly rounded, densely branched clump of tiny, green leaves. In year two, the plant maintains its compact mounding habit but nearly doubles its spread to just over two feet across.

This is a very floriferous selection whose flower power is amplified by its having its flowers spaced closely together on the stems. Periwinkle blue flowers are coddled by dark purple calyxes just above the aromatic foliage from early summer into early fall.

‘Purrisan Blue’ has everything today’s gardeners are looking for: a low maintenance, drought tolerant, deer resistant, long blooming perennial that looks great all season.

56. Cat’s Pajamas
Click to display
A purr-fect Catmint for fans of ‘Cat's Meow’ who love the look but want a smaller scale version. In addition to being a little over half the height, ‘Cats Pajamas’ also blooms about 2-3 weeks earlier than ‘Cat's Meow’. The ball-shaped habit carries long, dark flower stems that hold indigo blue flowers. Unlike older varieties that only produce flowers at the top of the stems, this improved Catmint has blooms from the soil to the tips of the stems. Even when the flowers are past peak, the color of the rosy purple calyxes give your garden an additional splash of color. As an added bonus, the small, aromatic leaves keep deer and rabbits away. Try this shorter stature plant in city gardens or near the front of the border.

This first year flowering perennial reportedly keeps on blooming without having to be deadheaded, though you may still want to trim back spent flowers to maintain a tidy appearance.

69. PowWow™ Wild Berry
Click to display
This variety is incredibly impressive for a seed grown Echinacea. It’s no surprise that it is a 2010 All America Selections winner. This first year flowering perennial reportedly keeps on blooming without having to be deadheaded, though you may still want to trim back spent flowers to maintain a tidy appearance.

In plant trial gardens, it was noted how floriferous the plants were. Each stocky, relatively short plant carried a bouquet of fragrant, 3-4”, deep purple-pink to near-magenta flowers on stiff, branched stems. More branches result in more flowers per plant and a showier display in the landscape. It was noted that the older flowers were nearly the same magenta color as the new flowers; the flowers held their bright coloration very well as they aged.

A showy perennial wildflower that blooms heavily from mid-spring to late summer, often with sporadic blooms into fall. Early- and long-blooming, Prairie Blaze Vintage Lime sets daisyesque flowers with pink rays having lime-green tips. Borne on short, sturdy stems, the uniquely colored flowers make excellent, long-lasting cuts for floral arrangements and bouquets.

Left in the garden, the flowers attract bees and butterflies; and the dried end-of-season seed heads that follow provide sustenance for songbirds as well as interest for the winter garden.

Fascinators are those fashionable pins that ladies wear in their hair in London for the Queen’s birthday or the ladies in Kentucky wear for the Derby when a hat is just too much. When the Pink Fascinator Coneflower burst on the scene, it made just as much a fashion statement as one of those elegant pins.

The petals are a deep hot raspberry with a high mounding center cone to match. Birds, butterflies and bees can’t stay away from these beauties. The flowers keep coming all summer and, if deadheaded, well into fall. They stay upright, even in the rain, and keep to themselves in a tidy clump.
