12. Summer Sparkles®
Click to display
Baby’s Breath has come a long way over the years, with breeders improving their habit, bloom time, and longevity in the garden. SUMMER SPARKLES® sets a new standard in taller Gypsophilas. Unlike most which are quite open in habit and go dormant in late summer, this new variety has a much more compact, refined looking form and looks great in the garden all season.

It forms a uniform, very densely branched, rounded clump of grey-green foliage that becomes completely covered in flowers from late spring through midsummer. The white flowers are small, semi-double, and slightly fragrant. They are borne prolifically on all sides of the plant. Deadheading the first round of flowers will encourage the plant to rebloom.

Blackberry Lily, Leopard LilyBelamcanda chinensis
13. Freckle Face
Click to display
This unique perennial produces a profusion of two inch wide, brilliant orange blossoms with heavy red specking and shading on each of the six overlapping petals. They are produced atop mid-sized plants with green, sword-shaped foliage like that of a tall bearded iris.

Belamcanda blooms for weeks in late summer, and its season of interest is extended into fall with the interesting seed pods which develop. Tan, pear-shaped pods burst open to reveal clusters of black seeds resembling blackberries, hence the common name. They are persistant thru the winter and are attractive in fresh or dried flower arrangements.

16. Little Goldstar
Click to display
Destined to become the new standard, this new introduction is a terrific improvement over ‘Goldsturm’. While ‘Goldsturm’ can stand waist-high in bloom with tall, wispy flowering stems, ‘Little Goldstar’ is a much more compact, proportional plant. Standing just knee high, this plant forms a bushy, short clump of rich green foliage covered with a dome of closely spaced, starburst-shaped, 2-2.5”, golden yellow blossoms held just above the foliage. Very well-branched scapes carry loads of flowers from midsummer through early fall. Over 80 flowers have been counted on a single plant, making this selection more floriferous than ‘Goldsturm’.

One of the very best Big Bluestem from hybridizer Brent Horvath.

Butterfly WeedAsclepias tuberosa
32. Hello Yellow
Click to display
A virtually hassle-free, very long lived perennial, this cultivar of our native A. tuberosa offers three months of golden yellow blooms from early through late summer. Deadheading the flowers will stimulate another bloom cycle about a month after the first one.

The flowers, which are heavily laden with nectar and pollen, are particularly attractive to hummingbirds, Monarch butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects.

Gather bouquets of Asclepias all summer long; the long stems are wonderful for cutting and are long-lasting. Sear the ends of the cut stems over a flame to stop the milky sap from leaking out.

Following the fabulous flowers, green fruits develop which rupture to reveal seeds with long, silvery-white, silky hairs reminiscent of its cousin, common milkweed. These are great to use in dried flower arrangements.

44. PowWow™ Wild Berry
Click to display
This variety is incredibly impressive for a seed grown Echinacea. It’s no surprise that it is a 2010 All America Selections winner. This first year flowering perennial reportedly keeps on blooming without having to be deadheaded, though you may still want to trim back spent flowers to maintain a tidy appearance.

In plant trial gardens, it was noted how floriferous the plants were. Each stocky, relatively short plant carried a bouquet of fragrant, 3-4”, deep purple-pink to near-magenta flowers on stiff, branched stems. More branches result in more flowers per plant and a showier display in the landscape. It was noted that the older flowers were nearly the same magenta color as the new flowers; the flowers held their bright coloration very well as they aged.

76. Blossom of Snow
Click to display
It’s a miracle that Leontopodium Blossom of Snow exists! This beautiful plant, also called Edelweiss, was almost extinct. The Sound of Music is partly to blame. This movie caused a real Edelweiss-craze. Fans went en masse to the mountains to pick Edelweiss. Now Edelweiss is a protected species. Fortunately we can enjoy Blossom of Snow to the fullest. This new Edelweiss variety blooms like no other. Not once, but twice a year: in summer and again in autumn. Blossom of Snow has characteristic, large star-shaped flowers. Its flowers are pure white with a yellow center, which gives a refreshing look combined with its silvery foliage. Blossom of Snow grows to 16" high and 24" wide. This perennial is an excellent choice for rock gardens, mixed planting, perennial borders and as solitary in a container. And did you know Edelweiss is also suitable as cut flower? That is because of its exceptionally long flower stems. Leontopodium Blossom of Snow is very hardy. Put the plant in full sun in well drained, sandy soil. Prune Blossom of Snow after it has finished flowering. Other than that, this gorgeous Edelweiss hardly requires maintenance.
